A Bucklesbury umbrella at the Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich
Our heritage

A London umbrella tradition

Bucklesbury umbrellas are made by hand in a traditional London workshop whose umbrella-making heritage dates back to 1805.

Since the 1750s

London made the umbrella a gentleman's companion.

When the merchant and travel writer Jonas Hanway began carrying an umbrella through London in the 1750s, he was reportedly mocked for it. By the time of his death in 1786, other Londoners had followed his example, and the long, furled umbrella with a curved wooden handle became one of the most recognisable accessories in British dress.

The workshop

Made the way London umbrellas have always been made

Our umbrellas are constructed by hand in London, in small batches, using traditional techniques. The workshop continues an umbrella-making tradition dating back to 1805, and every umbrella is individually finished by a craftsman before it is Rain Tested In England™.
